Researching New Methods of Screening for Adverse Pregnancy Outcome: Lessons from Pre-eclampsia
نویسنده
چکیده
Complications of pregnancy contribute to a substantial proportion of the global burden of disease [1]. Most adverse pregnancy outcomes occur to women who lack obvious risk factors. However, despite many years of research, the current approach to screening low-risk women for complications such as pre-eclampsia and stillbirth is still based around serial measurement of blood pressure, urinalysis, and symphysis-fundal height [2]. In this Essay, I argue that the failure to develop more effective programmes of screening and intervention is due in part to limitations in the approach to research in this area. The arguments will be illustrated using utero-placental Doppler flow velocimetry and screening for pre-eclampsia as an example. Many of the principles are relevant for trials of other methods of screening and intervention to prevent preeclampsia, for other adverse pregnancy outcomes (stillbirth in particular), and in other areas of medicine.

Correlation of pregnancy outcome with quadruple screening test at second trimester
Background: Abnormal levels of the markers AFP, hCG, and uE3 could be useful in predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study was designed to determine the correlation between second trimester maternal serum markers and adverse pregnancy outcome (APO). Methods: In this historical cohort study, we randomly followed 231 obstetric patients with quadruple screening test in 14-18 weeks of ges...
متن کاملThe Relationship of Uterine Artery Doppler Velocimetry Findings and Hemoglobin Concentration with Pregnancy Outcomes in Pre-eclampsia
Abstract Background: Epidemiologic studies have shown the relationship of maternal hemoglobin level and abnormal findings in uterine Doppler sonography with pregnancy- related complications. In this study, we evaluated the relationship of uterine artery Doppler velocimetry findings and hemoglobin level with the outcomes of pregnancy in women with preeclampsi...

Background: Poor pregnancy outcome and complications like pre-eclampsia, preterm delivery, premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) have special importance and finding new methods for their prediction have been always under serious concern. متن کاملStudy protocol. A prospective cohort study of unselected primiparous women: the pregnancy outcome prediction study
BACKGROUND There have been dramatic changes in the approach to screening for aneuploidy over the last 20 years. However, the approach to screening for other complications of pregnancy such as intra-uterine growth restriction, pre-eclampsia and stillbirth remains largely unchanged. Randomised controlled trials of routine application of high tech screening methods to the general population have g...
